Vaccine Information
Here, at Belly Rub N Grub, we want you and your feline/canine friend to be together for a long time. We developed this page to better help you make sense of the vaccinations that exist and the ones that are considered most important to your feline/canine friend. To learn more about vaccinations for cats and dogs, we encourage you to follow this link to learn more by visiting the UC Davis Veterinarian site.
*Important Note*
Please confirm these guidelines with your vet as Some clinics may have a vaccine that will last for one year, while another clinic will have the same vaccine that lasts three years. Core vaccines are recommended for all puppies/DOGS and CAT/KITTENS with an unknown vaccination history. The diseases involved have significant morbidity and mortality and are widely distributed, and in general, vaccination results in relatively good protection from disease. Also, clinics may want a non-core vaccine to be given as a core vaccine depending on your and your pet's lifestyle!
Core Vaccines
cats and kittens
FELINE VIRAL RHINOTRACHEITIS (FVR)
is a highly-transmissible virus spread to cats through aerosol or droplets. FVR can cause ulcers of the eye, irreversible damage to nasal sinuses and fatality. Persistent infection may reoccur during times of stress.
Symptoms: runny nose, sneezing, eye infection, eye ulcers, poor appetite, fever and lung infection.
FELINE CALICIVIRUS
This virus can survive on contaminated surfaces, or be spread through aerosol or droplets. This virus is not necessarily caught through direct contact, making it highly contagious, causing painful mouth ulcers/oral disease or fatality in cats. Persistent infection may reoccur during times of stress.
Symptoms: runny nose, eye infection, mouth ulcers, poor appetite, fever, lung infection and lameness.
FELINE PANLEUKOPENBIS
(Feline Distemper)
Also known as Herpes Virus, and is extremely contagious primarily through contaminated surfaces or litter boxes. It often Results in severe illness and can be fatal for kittens.
Symptoms: fever, poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, tremors an lack of coordination, brain infection and heart damage.
FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS
(FeLV)
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a contagious virus that weakens a cat’s immune system and can lead to serious illness. It is spread through close contact between cats, including saliva, grooming, shared food and water bowls, bite wounds, nasal secretions and mother cats passing it to kittens. SOME CATS MAY CARRY THE VIRUS WITHOUT SHOWING SYMPTOMS FOR MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS. STRESS OR IMMUNE SUPPRESSION CAN ACTIVATE A PREVIOUSLY SILENT INFECTION. Kittens and cats with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable. Unlike canine parvovirus, FeLV is a retrovirus that attacks the immune system over time, making infected cats more susceptible to infections, anemia, and certain cancers.
Symptoms: cancerous tumors, leukemia and chronic infections due to immune system suppression. WEIGHT LOSS, lethargy, persistEnt OR RECURRING fever, RECURRING infections, PALE GUMS (ANEMIA), LOSS OF APPETITE, CHRONIC RESPIRATORY OR SKIN INFECTIONS, DIARRHEA OR GASTROINTESTINAL ISSUES, ENLARGED LYMPH NODES, NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS.
RABIES
RABIES spreads through the nerves to the brain with progressive disease resulting in death. It is contracted from the bite of an infected animal or through infected saliva contact with mucous membranes.
SYMPTOMS: death, restlessness, irritability, inability to swallow and paralysis. Rabies is a zoonotic disease.
ZOONOTIC DISEASE Is a disease which is spread between animals and people caused by germs, such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. Some are mild, while some, such as Rabies can be severe and life threatening.
FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS
(FIP)
Cats are commonly exposed to an enteric coronavirus through feces in shared litter boxes. FIP is a mutation of the coronavirus which allows it to gain systemic dissemination throughout the body causing progressive illness resulting in death.
Symptoms: respiratory infection, diarrhea, eye damage, nervous system damage and fluid collection in body cavities.
Non-core vaccines
Cats and kittens
core vaccines
dogs and puppies
FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY
known as Feline AIDS (FIV) makes cats more susceptible to infections and other illnesses when it attacks the immune system. It usually spreads through biting. Outdoor male cats are the most infected due to fighting.
FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS
Is caused by a coronavirus that only affects cats. It can infect many organs and cause symptoms similar to many other conditions, making diagnosis extremely difficult. The virus often spreads through contact with feces.
CLAMYDIA FELIS
Causes Chlamydiosis, a chronic bacterial upper respiratory infection, in cats. It also affects the gastrointestinal system, reproductive system, and eyes. It is highly contagious and prevalent among cats living in crowded conditions. which is spread between animals and people. CLAMYDIA FELIS IS A ZOONOTIC DISEASE.
ZOONOTIC DISEASE - Is a disease which is spread between animals and people caused by germs, such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. Some are mild, while some, such as Rabies can be severe and life threatening.
DISTEMPTER
A viral infection that can affect several body systems, including the respiratory and nervous systems.
SYMPTOMS: fever, discharge from eyes and nose, lethargy, coughing, and vomiting or diarrhea.
HEPATITIS
A viral infection that causes liver inflammation. There are two types of hepatitis. ICH - Infection Canine Hepatitis and canine chronic hepatitis.
symptoms: Lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice (yellowing eyes and gums), excessive thirst, and a fluid-filled swollen belly.
PAROVIRUS
A viral infection that can affect many body systems including the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems
SYMPTOMS: Sudden and severe lethargy, loss of appetite, persistent vomiting, and foul-smelling, often blood diarrhea.
LEPTOSPIROSIS
A bacterial infection of the urinary system
SYMPTOMS: High fever, shivering, severe lethargy, and loss of appetite; KIDNEY FUNCTION: Increased thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration; liver function: Jaundice (a noticeable yellowing of the skin, whites of the eyes, and gums); PAIN AND MOBILITY: Muscle stiffness, joint pain, and a visible reluctance to move; AND SEVERE SYMPTOMS: Bleeding disorders (blood in urine or stool, nosebleeds), difficulty breathing, and swelling of the limbs. LEPTOSPIROSIS S A ZOONOTIC DISEASE.
ZOONOTIC DISEASE - Is a disease which is spread between animals and people caused by germs, such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi. Some are mild, while some, such as Rabies can be severe and life threatening.
RABIES
A viral disease of the nervous system that is both fatal and a zoonotic disease, meaning it is transmissible to people
SYMPTOMS: death, restlessness, irritability, inability to swallow and paralysis. RABIES IS A ZOONOTIC DISEASE.
